What is Betrayal Trauma

What is Trauma?

Trauma is defined as a deeply distressing or overwhelming experience that is commonly followed by emotional and physical shock. Traumatic experiences can lead to short and long-term challenges including negative impact Trauma is an intense response due to exposure to a deeply distressing or life-threatening  incident or series of events that have a lasting  negative impact on an individuals functioning, mental, physical, social, emotional, and spiritual well being.  Trauma can occur from various experiences such as childhood neglect, sudden unexplained separation from loved one, violent event, oppression, abuse, poverty. 

How is betrayal trauma different?

Betrayal trauma differs vastly from other types of trauma because it involves not just abuse, but also an unexpected, severe, and devastating attatchment injury caused by a spouse or close family member who was deeply  loved and trusted. it is often described by the betrayed as more traumatic that the death of a loved one.  Betrayal trauma is multifaceted and the impact extends to all areas of the life of the betrayed, as all areas of life are not longer as it seemed. 

Symptoms of Betrayal Trauma

Hypervigilance

Paranoia

Loss of Identity

Shame or self-blame

Flashbacks/Intrusive Thoughts

Nightmares

Depression

Anxiety

Brain Fog

Impaired Sleeping

Self Doubt

Feeling Crazy

Shock

Grief

Lack of appetite or Overeating

Rollercoaster of emotions
